4th of July Dog Parade

There were several events in Hyder on the Fourth. The dog parade below was one. There was also an axe throwing event and a broom kicking. The "Bushwoman" contest was interesting. It was women racing through a series of events including chopping wood, casting a fishing line, washing some socks, shooting a bear(a girl wearing a bear costume), flipping a pancake, diapering a baby and putting on lipstick while running. It was fun to watch. Hyder is only a town of 100 or so. Stewart has about 300. Some of the Stewart folk come over and participate. This was truly a small town event. Later that evening there was a parade with many interesting vehicles. The prize was for having the ugliest vehicle. Next was the "Chicken Poop Contest". A grid was draw on a large piece of cardboard, each square was numbered, people purchased a square for $2. The chicken was placed in the cage with the grid and the waiting and encouraging began. About 50 minutes later the chicken missed our square by about 3 inches. The prize was $400.
There was a bonfire later, but Cathy and I headed back to the camper.
